כָּפַר
kaphar
kah-FAHR
to cover, to atone
Where it comes from
The root means to cover over, and it is the word used when Noah covers the ark with pitch. Atonement in Hebrew is not the erasing of a thing but the covering of it, done from the outside, by someone whose job it is.

Exodus 30:10
