יוֹבֵל

yovel

yo-VALE

jubilee, ram horn

Where it comes from

A yovel is a ram horn, and the fiftieth year is named after the noise it makes. Debts cancelled, land returned, slaves freed, all announced by a horn. There is no evidence Israel ever kept it. It stayed on the books anyway.

Leviticus 25:10

And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.
