קָרְבָּן
qorban
kor-BAHN
offering, that which is brought near
Where it comes from
From qarab, to draw near. A qorban is not primarily a gift but a way of getting closer — the thing you send ahead of you into a room you cannot enter yourself. The whole sacrificial system is named after proximity, not payment.
