The Message
Proverbs counts the locust among four things little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise. No king, no command, no one out in front — and they move as one anyway. The proverb is not admiring the swarm. It is noticing that order does not always need a throne to produce it.
The Creature
Desert locusts spend most of their lives as ordinary solitary grasshoppers, actively avoiding one another. When crowding passes a threshold they physically change — colour, body shape, behaviour — and become gregarious, swarming in their millions. Nobody gives the order. It emerges from the crowd, which is precisely what the proverb noticed thousands of years before anyone could explain the mechanism.
