Nineteenth-century wood engraving after Gustave Doré, whose 241 plates for the 1866 Bible de Tours are the most widely reproduced Bible illustrations ever made. Built on scale — a small figure against a vast sky, sea or storm. Printed as light on darkness, so the garment itself becomes the shadow.
