There is a kind of book some churches keep that most people have never seen. It is a list of scriptures written in the first person, meant to be read out loud rather than studied. A confession book.
We have made one, and it is free. Eighty-four confessions, twelve themes, every line carrying the verse it came from.
Why out loud
The idea is not complicated. Paul writes that with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation (Romans 10:10). Something happens when a thing leaves your mouth that does not happen when it only sits in your head.
That is the whole method. Read it aloud. Not to make it true — it was true before you said it — but because saying it is how you take hold of it.
Twelve themes
We grouped them by what a person actually needs on a given morning.
- What Jesus Has Made Me
- God Is With Me
- He Is My Strength
- He Gives Peace
- He Provides
- He Heals
- Words That Honour Him
- The Mind He Gives
- He Has Forgiven Me
- The Name Of Jesus
- He Keeps My House
- Thanks And Praise
Seven lines each. Scripture is the King James, which is out of copyright, so the whole thing is free to print, copy and hand out.
The part worth reading
The first draft of this book had a problem, and it is a problem most confession lists have. It was full of the word I.
I am this. I have that. I can do the other. Eighty of the eighty-four lines began that way. Read back, it sounded less like worship and more like a man talking himself up.
So we rewrote all of it. Now God is the one doing the thing in nearly every line.
Old: I am in Christ, so I am a new creature.
New: Christ has made me new. The old is gone.
Same promise. The credit moved.
The name above every name
One theme we added late, and it turned out to be the spine of the book: The Name Of Jesus.
Philippians 2 straight through. God hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name — every knee bowing, every tongue confessing that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Boldness in scripture is never self-belief. It is boldness in his name. That is the difference between a confession and an affirmation, and it is the reason this book exists.
How to use it
A day at a time. Open XA Daily and the confession of the day sits on the Verse tab, under the verse of the day. Tap the reference and the chapter opens in the reader.
Or all at once. Download the PDF, set large so you can read it off a stand without squinting. Fifteen pages, every verse listed again at the back so you can look them up.
Nothing to buy. Nothing to sign up for.
