Most mornings you get dressed without thinking about it. Paul says there is a second set of clothes, and that one you have to put on deliberately.
We built the Armor of God into XA Daily for that. It sits on the verse tab behind a latch you slide across, because a tap is too cheap a gesture for it. Inside, the whole passage, then the seven pieces one at a time with a prayer for each, then the verses to stand on when the day turns.
Paul wrote it in chains
This is not a man theorising about conflict. Four verses after the sword of the Spirit, in the same breath, he says where he is:
For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. (Ephesians 6:20)
He is under arrest and asking for boldness, not release. The armour is what he put on in a cell.
The fight is not with people
Before he names a single piece, Paul rules out the obvious enemy.
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. (Ephesians 6:12)
Which is worth sitting with, because flesh and blood is almost always what we think we are fighting. The person who said the thing. The one who left. The one in the car in front. Paul says none of them is the war.
It is God’s armour before it is yours
Here is the part most of us miss. Paul did not invent this picture. Isaiah had already used it, and in Isaiah the one wearing it is God himself.
For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head. (Isaiah 59:17)
And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins. (Isaiah 11:5)
Breastplate, helmet, girdle — worn by the Lord, centuries before Ephesians. So when Paul tells you to put on the whole armour of God, he means it as a possessive. It is not armour God issues. It is armour God wears, handed to you. You are not being sent out in borrowed kit to fight on your own. You are being dressed in his.
The seven
Six pieces and one practice, in the order Paul gives them.
- The belt of truth — what holds the rest together (v14)
- The breastplate of righteousness — over the heart, and not your own (v14)
- The shoes of peace — feet shod with readiness, the gospel of peace (v15)
- The shield of faith — which quenches all the fiery darts, not some (v16)
- The helmet of salvation — over the mind (v17)
- The sword of the Spirit — the only piece that cuts, and it is the word of God (v17)
- Praying always in the Spirit — the thing you do while wearing all of it (v18)
Notice the sword. Every other piece is something you wear. One is something you use, and it is not your cleverness or your willpower. It is scripture. Which is the whole reason Jesus answered the wilderness with it is written three times and nothing else.
Stand, and having done all, stand
Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. (Ephesians 6:13)
The goal Paul names is not winning. It is standing. Four times in four verses he says it — stand, withstand, stand, stand therefore. The victory is already decided and already somebody else’s; your job on the bad day is to still be upright at the end of it.
What is in the room
Open XA Daily on the verse tab and slide the latch. You get:
- Pray it through — nine screens, the seven pieces one at a time, each with its line from the King James and a prayer. About three minutes.
- Read it straight — Ephesians 6:10–18 whole, on one page.
- Stand your ground — ten passages to hold on to, from James 4 to Romans 8, each one opening into the full chapter.
- When you are afraid — the fear verses, including the ones already behind the anxious and afraid doors.
- Forty verses for protection — the printed card set, grouped the way it was chosen: the victory of Jesus, refuge, no accusation, fear not, resist and stand, kept.
Every verse in it is King James and every one has been checked word for word against the text. Free, no signup, works offline once the app has loaded.
One honest note
At the bottom of the room there is a line about 988 and about telling a real person. Scripture and a human being are not rivals. If today is heavier than a page can carry, reach somebody — and the armour still fits while you do.
