Most people do not read the Bible front to back. They come to it carrying something. Afraid, or angry, or grieving, or stuck on a decision they have to make by Friday — and what they want to know is what it says about that.
Chapter and Verse is a book for exactly that. Sixty-two subjects. Seven hundred and fifty-five passages. Every one printed out in full from the King James, with nothing written around them.
Nothing in between
That part is deliberate, and it is the whole point of the book.
Most topical Bibles do one of two things. They give you a bare list of references you then have to go and look up one at a time, which nobody does. Or they give you three paragraphs of somebody’s opinion with a verse tacked on the end, and by the time you reach the verse you have already been told what to think about it.
This one gives you the passage. All of it, in order, and then the next one. You read it and you decide what it means.
What is in it
The subjects are the ones people actually go looking for.
- The hard mornings — anxiety and worry, fear, grief and loss, loneliness, anger, shame, doubt, bitterness, suffering.
- Ordinary life — marriage, children and parenting, work, money and possessions, friendship, family, words and the tongue, gossip.
- The walk — faith, prayer, grace, repentance, patience, humility, generosity, contentment, waiting on God.
- Who he is — Jesus, the cross, the resurrection, the Holy Spirit, salvation, heaven.
Every reference opens
Tap any reference and it opens that passage in XA Daily, where you can read the whole chapter around it. A verse on its own can be made to say almost anything. The chapter it came out of is the cure for that, and it is one tap away from every single passage in the book.
Read it or print it
Online it reads as one continuous book. A button at the top drops the full list of subjects and jumps you to any of them, and it follows you down the page, telling you where you are as you go.
There is also a free PDF of the whole thing — a hundred and fifty-five pages, contents with page numbers, sized to actually read rather than to save paper. Print it, bind it, leave it somewhere a person might pick it up.
Why the King James
Because it is free of copyright, which means we can print all seven hundred and fifty-five passages in full and give the book away without asking anybody’s permission, and so can you.
It is free, and it stays free
No account, no email, nothing to buy. Read it here: xtraamerican.com/chapter-and-verse.
Use it to find something fast when somebody asks you a hard question. Read a subject straight through when you are in the middle of one. Or hand it to somebody and let them read it without anybody standing between them and the page.
