The Message
Three animals in one sentence, and the instruction is to be two of them at once. Shrewd without being predatory. Gentle without being naive. Most people manage one of those and call it a virtue. Jesus sends them out as sheep among wolves and asks for both.
The Creature
A serpent smells with its tongue, flicking particles from the air onto a sensory organ in the roof of the mouth — which is why the forked tongue gives it direction as well as scent. Doves and pigeons are among the very few birds that can drink by suction, keeping their heads down instead of tipping back to swallow.
