The Message
One of the most practical verses in the Bible, and it almost never gets preached. If you want the harvest you accept the animal, and the animal makes a mess. Anything worth doing comes with mess attached. Wanting the increase without the ox is wanting a clean barn and calling it farming.
The Creature
An ox is cattle trained to draught work, usually worked in pairs under a yoke. Oxen powered farming for thousands of years because they are steadier and stronger than horses on heavy ground, if slower. Isaiah uses the same animal for a harder point: The ox knoweth his owner — that is the low bar Israel is measured against, and missing.
