יְהוָה
YHWH
traditionally not spoken · read aloud as Adonai, ah-doh-NIGH
the covenant name of God
Where it comes from
The four letters God gives Moses as His own name, connected to the verb to be. Jewish practice has long avoided pronouncing it out of reverence, reading Adonai — Lord — instead. The KJV follows this by printing LORD in small capitals wherever these four letters appear.
Exodus 3:14
And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
