בְּרִית
berit
beh-REET
covenant
Where it comes from
Hebrew does not make a covenant, it cuts one — karat berit. The idiom comes from the animals cut in half in Genesis 15, and it tells you a covenant is not a handshake.
Genesis 9:9
And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you.
