Joy, written from prison
Paul and Timotheus, servants of Jesus Christ, and Paul is in chains as he writes. Joy and rejoice run through all four chapters anyway, which is the whole point of the letter. He tells them his imprisonment has actually advanced the gospel, and his bonds are known throughout the palace. At the centre is a passage that may be an early hymn, about Christ emptying Himself, taking the form of a servant and becoming obedient unto death. He writes about being content in plenty and in want, having learned it rather than been born with it. And that he can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth him.
