Nahum

King James Version · 3 chapters · 47 verses · Old Testament

Nineveh's turn

The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite. Jonah had seen Nineveh repent; generations later it had gone back to what it was, an empire famous for cruelty as policy, and Nahum announces that it is finished. Three chapters of poetry describing the siege and fall of a city that everybody assumed was permanent — the chariots raging in the streets, the palace dissolved, the lion's den empty. It is not comfortable reading, and it was not written to be. It was written for people under the boot, and it stops early on to say the LORD is good.
