The prophet who saw the most
Isaiah the son of Amoz, prophesying in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah. The first half is judgment — on Judah for going through the motions of worship while ignoring the poor, and on every nation around. In chapter 6 he sees the Lord high and lifted up, cries that he is undone, and is sent. The second half turns to comfort: a voice crying in the wilderness, a people carried and not abandoned. And at its centre, chapter 53, a servant wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities, written seven centuries before a Roman cross.
