Forty years of being ignored

Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests at Anathoth, called as a young man and told plainly that nobody would listen. He preached for about forty years while Judah slid into the Babylonian exile, and he was right the whole time and hated for it. He was let down into a dungeon of mire, put in the stocks, and had his roll cut up and burned by the king three or four leaves at a time. He wept over the city he could not save. And in the middle of the collapse he bought a field as an act of hope, and promised a new covenant written on the heart.
