Love poetry, and no apology for it
The song of songs, which is Solomon's. Eight chapters of love poems between a bride and her beloved, with a chorus of the daughters of Jerusalem answering back. There is no law here, no history, no sermon, and God is not named. There is longing, delight in the body, separation and searching through the streets at night, and reunion. The imagery is agricultural and unembarrassed: vineyards, spices, doves, flocks coming up from the washing. Read plainly it is a celebration of married love; read as generations of Jews and Christians have also read it, it is a picture of God's love for His people.
