How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?

How long. Four times. God does not correct him for asking, and the psalm still turns before the end.

Psalm 6

I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears.

He soaks the bed with weeping and writes it down. Scripture made room for that.

Psalm 88

Lover and friend hast thou put far from me, and mine acquaintance into darkness.

88:18 · King James

The one psalm that never lifts. It ends in darkness, and it was kept. If you are there tonight, you are not outside the book.

Psalm 42

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.
