About this psalm
The first of the seven the church came to call penitential. David is worn through — I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim — and he asks for mercy rather than correction. Then, without explanation, the psalm turns: the LORD hath heard the voice of my weeping. Nothing in his circumstances is said to have changed.
