Sound doctrine, and what it looks like
Paul to Titus, left on Crete to set in order the things that were wanting and ordain elders in every city. It is short and closely related to 1 Timothy: the same concern with the character of leaders, the same problem of talkers and deceivers who had to be stopped. What marks Titus out is how tightly it ties belief to behaviour. Every doctrinal statement in it is followed almost immediately by a description of ordinary conduct — older men, older women, young women, young men, servants — and the reason given each time is that the teaching of God should be adorned rather than blasphemed.
