Malachi

King James Version · 4 chapters · 55 verses · Old Testament

The last word before the silence

The burden of the word of the LORD to Israel by Malachi. The temple is rebuilt and the excitement has worn off, and what is left is going through the motions — priests offering blind and lame animals nobody would dare give the governor, men divorcing their wives, tithes withheld. The book is built as an argument: God makes a charge, the people answer wherein, and He tells them exactly wherein. It ends with a promise to send Elijah before the great and dreadful day of the LORD. Then nothing, for centuries, until a voice starts crying in the wilderness.
