An orderly account, carefully checked
The writer says at the start what he is doing: many have written accounts, he has traced everything from the first, and he is setting it in order for Theophilus so he can know the certainty of what he has been taught. It is the fullest gospel and the most interested in people everyone else overlooked — shepherds, a widow, a tax collector up a tree, a criminal on the next cross. The parables only Luke keeps are the ones everybody knows: the good Samaritan, the prodigal son, the rich man and Lazarus. Near the end, on the road to Emmaus, Jesus explains Himself from Moses onward. It closes at Bethany, with the ascension.
