How to come near a holy God
The book people give up on, and the one that explains the rest of the Bible. Israel is camped at Sinai with God living in the middle of the camp, and Leviticus answers the obvious question: how does anyone survive that? The answer is sacrifice and separation. Offerings for sin, for peace, for thanksgiving. Rules for priests, for food, for disease, for what makes a thing clean or unclean. At its centre is the Day of Atonement, one day a year when the nation's guilt is carried out into the wilderness on a goat. Read it and Hebrews suddenly makes sense.
