Visions among the captives
A priest already in Babylon with the first wave of exiles, sitting by the river Chebar when the heavens open. Ezekiel gets the strangest assignments in scripture: lying on one side for months, shaving his head with a barber's razor, cooking over dung, and being forbidden to mourn his wife as a sign to the people. The first half insists Jerusalem will fall, against every prophet saying otherwise. Then word arrives that it has, and the tone changes to restoration. A valley full of dry bones is asked whether it can live. The last chapters measure out a new temple, room by room.
