Both kingdoms fall
Elijah goes up in a whirlwind and Elisha takes his place, and the miracles keep coming: oil that does not run out, a boy raised, an axe head floating, Naaman washing seven times in the Jordan. But the kings get worse. The northern kingdom runs out of time first and Assyria carries Israel away. Judah lasts longer, helped by two good kings, Hezekiah and Josiah, who each buy a reprieve. It is not enough. Babylon comes, the temple is burned, the walls are broken down, and the people are marched into exile. The book ends with the last king of Judah alive in Babylon, lifted out of prison and eating at the king's table.
