The temple, and what became of it

Solomon builds the temple, and the account lingers over it: the gold, the dedication, the fire falling, the cloud so thick the priests cannot stand to minister. Then the kings of Judah, one after another, measured almost entirely by what they did about worship. Hezekiah reopens the temple doors his father had shut. Josiah finds the book of the law during repairs and tears his clothes when he hears it read. But the drift continues, and Babylon comes. The very last thing in the book is Cyrus of Persia telling the exiles they may go home and rebuild.
