Words

Verse 1All hail the power of Jesus' name
Let angels prostrate fall
Bring forth the royal diadem
And crown Him Lord of all
Bring forth the royal diadem
And crown Him Lord of all
Verse 2Ye chosen seed of Israel's race
Ye ransomed from the fall
Hail Him who saves you by His grace
And crown Him Lord of all
Hail Him who saves you by His grace
And crown Him Lord of all
Verse 3Let every kindred, every tribe
On this terrestrial ball
To Him all majesty ascribe
And crown Him Lord of all
To Him all majesty ascribe
And crown Him Lord of all
Verse 4O that with yonder sacred throng
We at His feet may fall
We'll join the everlasting song
And crown Him Lord of all
We'll join the everlasting song
And crown Him Lord of all

The story

Edward Perronet was a Huguenot descendant who fell out with the Wesleys and spent his life on the awkward edges of English Methodism. The hymn first appeared anonymously in 1779. Its most famous outing is probably apocryphal but too good to leave out: the missionary E. P. Scott is said to have walked unarmed into a hostile village in India, taken out his violin, closed his eyes and played it, and opened them to find the spears lowered. The tune CORONATION, written by Oliver Holden in Massachusetts in 1793, is the oldest American hymn tune still in common use anywhere in the English-speaking world.
