Locusts, and the day of the LORD

The word of the LORD that came to Joel the son of Pethuel. It opens with a plague of locusts so complete that the fields are stripped and the offerings stop because there is nothing left to offer. Joel reads the disaster as a warning of something larger — the day of the LORD, coming as destruction from the Almighty — and calls the whole nation to fast and turn back, telling them to rend their heart and not their garments. Then the promise that Peter quoted on the day of Pentecost: God will pour out His Spirit upon all flesh.
